Some people are natural spellers and others are not. If your child is struggling with spelling they may dread spelling tests and feel reluctant to study for them. At One to One Learning Center, we strive to teach your child tactics to better spell words intuitively, to memorize spelling words when necessary, and to apply those skills to writing.

Our Approach to Spelling

Most spelling tactics are not new, innovative processes. Combining these traditional techniques with visualization, a strong understanding of phonics, and knowledge of syllabication rules can help children become solid spellers.

Rules

Sounding out a word can always help. Associating sounds with certain letters or letter pairings can help children more efficiently decode the spelling of a word. In addition, teaching a child common blending (consonant clusters) can also help them effectively decipher spellings of words. Knowledge of consonant blends together with vowel blends can help children more easily sound out words.

Visualization

Teaching children sights words or using components of visual learning can help with spelling. At One to One we offer visualizing techniques and strategies that can often help struggling spellers become more effective spellers and writers.

Syllabication

Syllabication teaches students how to break words into syllables. Breaking a word into syllables and spelling the words one syllable at a time can make the process much easier.

Spelling can be a discouraging subject for children who are not naturally gifted at it. We help children develop a good spelling foundation by teaching them common, simple spelling strategies they can apply to writing.
